Friends Of The Camino
RICH IN FRIENDSHIP AND MEMORIES
Travel photos are like a time machine that instantly transport you back into the vivid scenes of remarkable memories. Every time I see a Camino picture with a fellow pilgrim I met along the way, my heart smiles warmly.
There are no strangers, just friends I haven’t met yet.
It is really easy to connect with people all over the world who are making their profound journey to Santiago de Compostela.
You may deeply connect with someone for a day, a week or the entire pilgrimage, which could last months… and then never see them again, or you can remain connected indefinitely.
To this day I am still in touch with some of the Italian pilgrims I met on my first Camino; we shared meals, drinks and a lot of laughs at some ‘inside jokes’ we still chuckle over now.
On the Camino del Norte, I met a Danish and Irish pilgrim during the first night, and the three of us clicked like nothing else! We’d engage in deep, metaphysical conversations for hours everyday, then tell jokes over hearty meals and cold beers at the end of our stage.
I’ll never forget the couple of retired Dutch farmers, who paced me daily on the Camino Frances from Roncesvalles. These guys were in the mid-60s and they moved fast! We often stayed in the same albergues, broke bread together, offered encouragement, and occasionally shared a cold Spanish beer after a long day.
At the end of our Camino they found me in Muxía and confided, “Every morning we wake up and wonder if we will beat Amie today?”
Oddly enough, I made many new friends because pilgrims had seen my videos and located me on the Camino.
“Are you Amie?!” I got that 1-2x a day by my 5th Camino and it was lovely to make the acquaintance of a new friend who enjoyed my storytelling.
Admittedly, what I found rather surreal was walking to Finisterre from Santiago de Compostela during a pilgrimage, and hearing my own laughter up ahead on the road.
“What on earth?”
A pilgrim was watching my Camino video literally while walking on the Camino.
When I’m back home, and while especially out hiking, I foster the friendly spirit of the peregrino to everyone I meet along the way.
Some people place their value on hoarding money, properties and other assets, while I appreciate my friendships, memories and life experiences, for I find they are the real treasure.
Buen Camino!
