Energy ROI
This morning at the gym, I wasn’t really watching people work out.
.
I was watching where people were spending their life force.
The body was lifting weights. The mind was carrying something much heavier.
As I moved between the weight room, the indoor track, the pool, the hot tub, and the sauna, I kept noticing the same pattern wearing different disguises.
A conversation about an old disagreement.
Or a complaint that had clearly been rehearsed many times before.
Someone worrying about a future that hadn’t arrived.
Someone else gossiping and replaying an interaction that was already over.
Everywhere I looked, energy was being spent on things that weren’t happening in the present moment.
It struck me that many people aren’t exhausted because of what they’re doing.
They’re exhausted because of what they’re carrying.
The argument belongs to last year, yet it still occupies mental real estate.
The disappointment occurred years ago, but it continues collecting interest.
An imagined future arrives early and demands payment before it even happens.
The event is over, or doesn’t even exist.
The energy investment continues.
Years ago, I probably wouldn’t have noticed any of this.
Then came Nepal and India.
Enough chaotic transportation, changing plans on the fly, unfamiliar environments, unexpected setbacks, and backpacks flying off Jeep rooftops.
Reality rarely waits for us to finish processing our preferences.
At some point, I stopped asking whether something was fair, whether I had been misunderstood, or whether I could convince someone to see my perspective.
A different question emerged.
“Is this worth my life force?”
That question has become one of the most useful filters I’ve ever found.
Because every day we are investing energy somewhere.
Some investments give something back.
Others produce endless mental loops that never pay a dividend.
I’ve learned that peace doesn’t arrive when reality finally cooperates.
It arrives when I stop making my peace dependent on reality cooperating.
The most valuable resource we possess isn’t time. Time is simply the container.
Life force is the currency.
And lately, I’ve been paying much closer attention to where mine is being spent.
