Mount Kilimanjaro Expedition

World’s Tallest Freestanding Mountain

I admit it, it’s addicting.

Launching myself zealously into an aggressive, new expedition with only 5 weeks to prepare may seem scary, risky or impossible to some.

I love the thrill!

Mount Kilimanjaro at height of 5,895 meters or 19,341 feet above sea level is the highest mountain in Tanzania, Africa, and also is the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

When I signed up for this Bucket list-worthy trek, there were several routes for me to select from varying in length from 5-8 days.

The 8-day Lemosho route is the longest and most expensive expedition choice, and also boasts the highest percentage of summit success due to the extra time to acclimatize to the steep elevation change.

I chose than one!

Although the Lemosho route is only 42 miles /70 km from gate to gate, it’s not the distance that makes it difficult, rather altitude sickness hinders climbers from reaching the top, and sadly causes deaths too.

Upon reaching Base Camp on Day 6 I shockingly watched the dead body of a climber being transported down by porters.

Picking the right expedition team is crucial, and I felt blessed to have selected the best one from what I witnessed of other crews along this incredible quest.

The summit night was by far the most grueling and challenging event I’ve accomplished thus far, and that includes being harder than a long-course triathlon or swimming from Alcatraz.

Strangely enough, I didn’t experience the long list of ailments from altitude sickness! Not once did I get a headache, nausea, dizziness, lack of appetite, etc.

My favorite ecological zone out of the 5 I experienced was the rain forest; it was vibrant with color, smells and wildlife!

One of the unforeseen challenges on this trek was going 8 days without a shower! Although we were fortunate to have a mobile toilet along for the journey, adapting to bathing in a small basin of water made it extremely stinky.
