Adventures In Spain
Culinary Adventures Abound
Spain is extraordinarily beautiful in the spring! Inspired straight from the pages of my journal’s bucket list, I’d brought to life a manifestation to explore this amazing nation in April of 2009.
Via San Francisco to the old continent, I excitedly hopped off a red-eye flight into the bustling capital of Madrid and immediately began tasting their famous fare.
Upon arrival and regardless of the jet-lag, I made a beeline for loud cafes and lively restaurants to nourish my curious spirit.
Fortunately I joined the lunch crowd pre-siesta and rubbed shoulders with locals as I washed down tapas with cañas of Estrella.
The following month became a wonderful whirlwind of unforgettable adventures via plane, train, bus, bike, metro and car!
You’ve heard the sayings, “The shortest road to men’s hearts is down their throats” or “The way to many an honest heart lies through the belly,” rings true for this voracious wanderer.
Conquering a massive country via my mighty appetite was a noble quest indeed.
Madrid had quite the vibrant culinary and cultural scene, suggesting a wise balance of museums, historical sites and a delicious amount of local cuisine.
Spain’s capital city is a melting pot of typical food from every region of the country, and foodies can enjoy everything from caracoles, pulpo, gazpacho, jamón to queso and much more.
Two foods that frequented my enthusiastic palette daily were racions of jamon, a dry-cured Spanish ham, and plates of cheese. Pair both of those with a bold Spanish wine, a handful of indigenous olives & almonds, and you’ve got yourself a decadent meal!
This indelible journey weaved me through the energetic streets and back alleyways of Barcelona, hunting down legendary local fare, and then southwest through many coastal cities until I reached Malaga.
The gods of adventure beckoned me to explore, play, eat, drink, dance and be merry throughout Spain for 4 incredible weeks.
I did not disappoint them.
While writing this voyage from 12-year-old memories that easily came flooding back so vividly, I realized there are far too many to include in a short blog piece.
Each day felt like I’d lived 3, each city discovered could be its own book!
So for now enjoy a photo gallery and know this… Spain and I are not done yet. I am hungry for more!
